The Goal:
My goal in creating this blog was to have a safe, anonymous forum to discuss the various “isms” of the fashion industry, and my extreme frustration with then, and the hopes that useful discussion will generate problem solving and positivity, and help balance the negativity of the industry with positive discourse on material culture.
The background:
I have worked in the garment industry in midtown Manhattan for six years….first for apparel and then accessory companies. They are famous companies, and you probably have their brand in your closet. They are billion dollar companies, they make great products and crappy products. They support global supply chairs, probably or definately use child or slave labor, and they are run by men who usually cast models that look like 12 year old boys. I don’t find 12 year old boys sexy, personally.
I have worked with designers and models with significant name recognition, and have seen some of the most inspiring talent…and some of the most repulsive bigotry. I’ve seen 14 year old models served alcohol by staff at work, (freelancing at a fashion show) aggressive bullying, manipulation, slander, and encouragement and rewarding of eating disorders. I am keeping my name anonymous for the time being, as I would be fired if I used proper names of brands or people….and I’m waiting for my bonus before I quit. I put eight year of my life into studying and working in the industry. As of today, I have 2o weeks until I quit.
Glenchick:
Glen Check, sometimes Glencheck, is a woven, often woolen, twill plaid of Scottish origin, that has no particular clan or family association. It was worn by the Duke of Windsor when he was Prince of Wales (hot) and also by Pee Wee Herman. (amazing) This sums up about 50% of my personality.
The other % is the chick part; my mostly but not officially affiliation with post or #?th wave feminism….and my frustrations about having morals and values in a very corrupt industry. I’ve made the decision to leave the commercial fashion industry for good….but I’m not going with out a fight….or at least a lot of bitching.
You:
Your feedback, thoughts, feelings, theories on any topics posted are encouraged, welcomed, and supported 100%. I believe the best way to shed light and positivity is through honest dialogues. Try to be nice, but I don’t think anyone can be as horrible to me as my current manager….and you definitely can’t throw silicone bust enhancers in my face from your computer….hahahahaha.
